Il motore 2000 cc montato sulla Alfa
Romeo 2000 Berlina si era dimostrato scarso di potenza e coppia
decisamente insufficienti e quando fu deciso di aumentare la
cilindrata, il numero dei cilindri da quattro a sei per raggiungere
una maggior potenza e coppia, il nuovo motore equipaggiò subito
anche la Spider. Per potere montare questo nuovo motore più
ingombrante, senza stravolgere eccessivamente l’equilibrio della
linea della vettura, il taglio del cofano fu allungato verso
l’avanti, ne e fu aumentata leggermente la bombatura e soprattutto
fu dotato di un’unica presa d’aria anziché due. Inoltre fu apportato
qualche leggero ritocco alla zona fra la banchetta dietro i sedili e
il cofano posteriore per permettere la realizzazione di due posti
posteriori. Fu anche eliminato qualche fregio cromato, tanto per
contenere, pur minimamente, i costi. Anche questo modello, come la
precedente 2000 spider non fu costruito con il sistema
Superlegggera, ma con lamierati di acciaio. Fu la prima vettura ad
essere costruita nel nuovo stabilimento Touring di Nova Milanese.

To improve the insufficient
power and torque of the Alfa Romeo 2000 Berlina’s 2000 cc engine,
the displacement was increased and the number of cylinders brought
from four to six. The resulting enhanced engine was used also on the
Spider but, in order to accommodate the bigger engine without
upsetting the balanced design of the car, the hood became longer and
more rounded and the two air vents were replaced by a single wider
opening. Another innovation was the subtle restyling of the area
between the seats and the trunk to make room for two back seats.
Some of the chrome trims disappeared too in the attempt to cut,
albeit slightly, costs. Built with steel plate rather than with the
Superleggera system – just like the previous 2000 Spider –this was
the first car produced in Touring's new Nova Milanese plant.
