David Brown, proprietario della Aston Martin e del gruppo industriale omonimo, nel 1959 commissionò alla Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera una nuova berlina 4 porte, che avrebbe dovuto essere equipaggiata con il nuovo motore 4000 cc. Tuttavia tale motore non era ancora pronto e le prime Lagonda Rapide, compresa quella personale di Sir David Brown, montarono il motore 3700 cc delle DB4 e DB5. A partire dalla metà del 1962, tutte le Lagonda ricevettero il motore 4000 cc. Come le Aston Martin, anche le Lagonda Rapide furono costruite in Inghilterra su licenza della Touring Superleggera.

In 1959, David Brown, owner of Aston Martin and of the homonymous Group, commissioned Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera a new 4-door sedan for their new 4000 cc engine. The car was ready before the engine, though, so the first Lagonda Rapides (including Sir David Brown’s personal car) were powered by the DB4 and DB5’s 3700 cc engine. The Lagondas built from the middle of 1960 onwards sported the new 4000 cc engine. Like the Aston Martins, the Lagonda Rapides were built in England under Touring Superleggera’s licence.
